International Design Day 2023

International Design Day 2023

Marking our 60th anniversary, the International Council of Design invites you to participate in this year's celebration of International Design Day on 27 April 2023 with a theme that nods to the Council’s legacy as an organisation. The theme for this year is Peace. Love. Design!. Inspired by the activism of the sixties, we encourage you to explore issues of environmentalism, social equity, collective movements and radical change. We invite Members and other design organisations to lead events, in-person or digital, covering topics related to the theme.

We would also like to thank Martina Giustolisi for her design of this year’s theme poster!

Why is a decolonial lens so urgent now as part of design professionalism? And what does "decolonizing design" mean for individual designers, institutions and universities that support design, but also for the design industry itself? Decolonizing Design by Elizabeth (Dori) Tunstall is "the long-awaited guidebook to the institutional transformation of design theory and practice by restoring the long-excluded cultures of Indigenous, Black, and People of Color communities." Interweaving lived experiences with case studies from her research, current-Dean of OCAD's Faculty of Design (Canada) addresses both leaders and practitioners in a call to action to transform, or decolonize design—for equity, inclusion and diversity.

The most recent reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, including the Synthesis Report, released 20 March 2023, warn that climate change has advanced to a point where it is now irreversible. While these findings are sobering, The Conversation briefly explores existing design solutions that cannot be avoided, mainly: reduce greenhouse gas emissions, slow climate change and help people adjust to the impacts of climate change.

Design ethics

What place do design contests hold within the design world? While some might argue that design awards help to contribute to the overall quality of design culture and community, with potentially some practical benefits for participants, others are not so convinced.

Back in December, Readymag invited the Council to speak on the topic of design contests and the ethics behind them.

Design Future

Women in Design

Discussing the imbalance of gender representation in type design—a heavily male-dominated industry—It’s Nice That spoke with three individuals from alternate areas of type design: Aasawari Kulkarni, an India-born educator and designer; Nadine Chahine, Lebanese type designer; and Chantra Malee, co-founder and CEO of Sharp Type. Their conversation examines the current environment of type design and how it can and is affecting female-identifying creatives operating within it.
