Meditations on Sustainability

Explorations in Ethical Design

Sustainability, environmental impact, life-cycle assessment, 'green design', circular economy, bio-technology… it is evident that design and environment are very closely linked. We know—and have known for some time—that the work we do every day, amplified by the mass-manufacture of our designs, has an impact on the world we inhabit. Mostly a negative one. A snapshot of some of the most recent thinking on the topic as well as some design approaches to this challenge.

Iridescent

The articles submitted for Volume 2 Issue 1 (2012) of the ico-D publication Iridescent pertain to the role of the designer as researcher, particularly in a postgraduate context, reframing the critical role of abstract knowledge to the field of design. Authors include Alison Barnes, Sheila Pontis, Kate LaMere and Robert Harland. Other studies related to transforming public spaces and social innovation are given by authors Claire McAndrew and Anne Chick.

Navigating Uncertainty

State of Fashion Report 2020

We all look forward to the McKinsey reports for their in-depth to-the-point analyses of various design industries. Unfortunately, 2020 is looking grim for the Fashion Industry. Despite the 'darkening mood' and industry slow-down throughout the world, the report underlines how strategy will be key to survival this year. Among the top ten strategic themes for fashion companies and designers are: prioritise sustainability, hone resilience in the face of global turmoil, look beyond China, sharpen socials to meet the minds of the next-generation of consumers, and, not surprisingly, keep the consumer journey simple, easy to use, and local.

On 30 November 2019 in Vancouver (Canada) on the occasion of the 28th General Assembly of our Members hosted by Member Emily Carr University of Art + Design, the 2019 ico-D President's Award and 2019 ico-D Achievement Awards were presented.

Platform recap

ico-D Events

What does it mean to be a professional designer today? What are our collective ethics? The 2019 Platform Meeting 'Design is professional' was held on 01 December 2019 in Vancouver at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, gathering Members from around the world. The goal was to establish a common definition of the design profession and parameters that professional designers worldwide can stand by. We also explored what it would mean to have an international code of conduct for designers.

ico-D’s Executive Board consists of individuals and experts from various design fields who are duly nominated and elected by ico-D Member organisations at the biennal ico-D General Assembly. The General Assembly of our Members gathered for the 28th time in our history on 30 November 2019 in Vancouver (Canada), hosted by Member Emily Carr University of Art + Design to elect individuals from seven different countries, who will serve on the ico-D Executive Board for the upcoming term.

The Danish Design Center pioneers in the field of social welfare design through their programme 'Future Welfare'. Aiming to "build on some of the most efficient design tools for public sector innovation" the Centre is putting in place a variety of projects that address issues as diverse as seasonal affective disorder, policy-making and healthcare. Victor Margolin (1941-2019)

Remembrances

It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of Victor Margolin (1941-2019): author, academic and design thinker whose tireless analysis of design history has shaped designers and their thinking worldwide. Victor Margolin, Professor Emeritus of Design History from University of Illinois in Chicago passed away on 27 November 2019 in Washington D.C. (United States).
