International Design Day 2022The old ways are no longer fit for purpose but the new ways have yet to be created. We find ourselves in this in-between, “liminal” space. It feels urgent to act…somehow. But how? Which designs will matter in the near or far futures? Which designers’ voices need to appear? Being both “suspended” and “in transition” can cause anxiety but also, potentially, growth. The theme of International Design Day 2022, Suspended in Transition, asks designers to step out of their comfort zone, to accept moments of partial-knowing, not-defining, and not designing-yet, to reflect from a place of discomfort and flux at the same time. |
SurveyWe are very excited to have our new website up and running. After months of working behind the scenes to launch, we would love to know what you think. Once you have visited and explored the new Council website, please take a few minutes to let us know your thoughts by completing our survey. Designing for designers is a unique challenge and your expert opinion on the result will be taken into consideration for the next stages. |

Sustainability NewsSignaling a change in the way that fashion approaches business, some of the larger fashion houses have applied for, and received B Corps certification. These are for-profit companies certified as "meeting rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency.” The Fashion Law explains what this means and what companies hope to communicate to consumers. |
New MemberICoD is pleased to welcome new Member Applied Science University (Bahrain), a leading educational institution and Department of Design and Art in the Kingdom of Bahrain. 05Member newsOn 01 July 2021, Japan Graphic Designers Association Inc. (JAGDA), changed its name to Japan Graphic Design Association Inc. The reason behind the name change was to expand JAGDA’s focus from representing graphic designers to include support for a range of design fields and interdependent industries. Since its founding in 1978, JAGDA has been a unique national body generating and promoting graphic design. While the acronym JAGDA stays the same, the association is ‘calling in’ a wider range of design practitioners to support multidisciplinary professional design in Japan—a future that is already happening. |

Book recommendationMost designers do not reflexively ask themselves, “Could someone use this product to harm someone else?” The book, 'Design for safety' examines the ways new technologies can cause or assist potential harms like domestic violence, stalking, access to children and other vulnerable people. Author and UX designer, Eva PenzeyMoog looks to identify opportunities to reduce the potential for misuse, arguing that when designers fail to take into account the potential for harm, they are unintentionally designing for the abusers. |
